Tides, textures and tristesse in Bali

During a recent visit with family in Bali I didn’t bring camera and computer, but had a bit of fun with my phone. Bali is beautiful, lush, polluted and overcrowded.

Sacred Fire - The Dashain Kali Festival in Kathmandu.

My love affair with the Himalayas began in 1990, when I arrive in Kathmandu during the people's revolution for democracy. I felt an immediate sense of kinship and have since lived and worked in Nepal, over time, letting the mountains, its people and sacred ways seep into my blood stream. While finishing my memoir Seeing Red, I went to Nepal to visit with the great goddess Kali venerated at the Dashain festival, and complete the pilgrimage my memoir is about. These images capture the atmosphere of the Kali pujas performed throughout the week at the Kali Temples in and around Kathmandu. Step into the purifying fire. More about my memoir: Seeing Red

Festa Major - Spain

The ferocious Spaniards engage in dangerous sports with a passion. Here, the annual Festa Major, complete with human tower competitions between the red and green teams, fire spewing dragons and devils and a nod to Saint Feliu with a long procession through town. One wild party, I'm lucky my hair didn't burn off, so close was I to the spark - for the shot. Exhilarating foray into devil's terrain. Shot on 400ISO film.
